On June 15, 1961,  Bob, along with his mother and sister, boarded  the “SS United States” in Bremerhaven, Germany to visit his uncle who had immigrated to the USA. The journey lasted seven days; on June 21st,  the “Big U” reached New York.

On September 14, 1961, Bob went back from New York to Europe and landed September 19th in Le Havre, France.

Today Bob is an avid geocacher (50% of “witch&bob”) and in May 2010 while talking with “Kottan” (Thomas is geocacher too and merchant of geocoins), the idea was born to produce a geocoin to commemorate the SS United States.  One dollar from every coin purchased will be donated to the SSUS Conservancy.

A short history of the “SS United States:”

1952: Maiden voyage of the luxury passenger liner.  Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing at an average speed of 34.51 knots (maximum speed = 38.32 knots).

1952-1969: A number of cruises and exactly 400 Atlantic crossings with a max. of 1,928 passengers and 1,093 crew members.

1992: The “SS United States Conservancy” was founded to rescue the ship from scrapping.

2003: “Norwegian Cruise Line” bought the vessel with the intention to restore it – which did not happen until today.
